our story

aeriel is a collaboration between the contemporary artist Sóley
Ragnarsdóttir and Strandet, a company striving for plastic free oceans located in Thy in Northern Denmark.

Together the ocean plastic pearls and amber show the ambivalent
relationship and encounters we have with nature today. Through repurposing the remains of polluting industries and practices, aeriel both encapsulates the remnants of our past and points to a gentler future.

  • Every year approximately 1000 tons of plastic washes ashore on the Danish West Coast.

  • The amber encapsulates information about a time before the Anthropocene and is thereby a stark, aesthetic contrast to the unwanted overflooding byplastic of our coastlines.

our process

At our workshop in Thy, we recycle old fish boxes. We wash the boxes, saw them into smaller pieces and granulate them. We then melt the plastic and mould it into pearls.

The colour of the pearls varies according to the colour of the fish boxes - no new colour has been added, and your jewellery is therefor free of critical chemicals.

  • 1. Fish boxes we find on the beach are washed and cut into smaller pieces.

  • 2. We granulate the plastic into the raw materials of our jewellery.

  • 3. We melt the plastic granules and mould them into unique pearls.

STRANDET

The mission of this unique collaboration with Strandet is to create awareness around the increasing plastic pollution and its detrimental consequences for the life in and around the ocean.
